Lloyd
Spencer Davis
Lloyd is the creative mind behind Adelie Productions.
He has a PhD in Zoology from the University of Alberta,
Canada, and he has been a scientist and university lecturer
for over twenty years. He is the author of over 100
scientific publications and, as a scientist, he has won
numerous awards, including:
• a Fulbright Award
• a Prince and Princess of Wales Scientific Award, and
• an Anzac Fellowship.
He is, or has been, the New Zealand representative on
international scientific committees dealing with subjects
from Antarctica to Animal Behaviour, from Penguins to the
whole area of Ornithology. He is the senior editor of the
landmark text
Penguin Biology (Academic Press, San
Diego) and the senior author of the treatise
Penguins (Poyser, AC Black/Helm, London and Yale
University Press, New Haven).
However, Lloyd's first love is the popularization of
science and he has attempted to do that with his popular
writing and filmmaking. His interest in photography
supplements the writing and also helps keep him in tune
with nature.
He established and was the Director of the world's
first university-based course devoted to natural history
filmmaking. Currently he holds the inaugural Stuart Chair
in Science Communication at the University of Otago and is
the Director of New Zealand's first centre devoted to
science communication. He has received an award from the
Foundation for Research, Science and Technology recognizing
his service in communicating science to the public.
His current projects include a book to follow on from
Looking for Darwin, a large format film about
penguins, and a documentary about a dancer.
