He is, or has been, the New Zealand representative on international scientific committees dealing with subjects from Antarctica to Animal Behaviour, from Penguins to the whole area of Ornithology. He is the senior editor of the landmark text Penguin Biology (Academic Press, San Diego) and the senior author of the treatise Penguins (Poyser, AC Black/Helm, London and Yale University Press, New Haven).

However, Lloyd's first love is the popularization of science and he has attempted to do that with his popular writing and filmmaking. His interest in photography supplements the writing and also helps keep him in tune with nature.
